When it comes to being visible online, remodelers need to be everywhere their potential customers are looking. So assuming you’ve gotten your website up and running and have a Facebook page with regular updates, let’s talk about some of the other key areas a remodeler should pay attention to, like online listings.
The most important is Google My Business, because of the importance of Google in our lives these days, as we covered last month.
These are a few of the other places you should be thinking about to get good exposure for your company. In all cases, once you’ve claimed or set up your profile, be sure to fill in as much information as possible and add photos to help sell your business. Encourage customers to leave reviews.
Houzz is one of the most-visited home and garden sites in the world and draws millions of visitors a month looking for advice on remodeling and information about projects. It’s the best of these sites on which to post your photos of past projects. According to Houzz, there are more than 20 million photos on the site, along with 2.5 million registered contractors.
Set up your free listing at Houzz.com/pro. Houzz is continuing to ramp up it paid services and the company really pushes those services when you try to sign up, but the free listing option still exists.
Better Business Bureau
The Better Business Bureau is one of the most respected brands among consumers. Whether or not you engage with the BBB, you likely have a profile as it tracks both member and non-member businesses. BBB accreditation matters to many consumers as it is seen as a third-party endorsement of your ethics and customer service.
If you’re not a member of a trade association such as NAHB, NARI or NKBA – join! The member directories of local chapters can be a good source of business and another place homeowners look for help.
These trade associations all offer several other benefits as well, including the ability to network with fellow remodelers and to improve your business through education and certification.
Angie’s List / Home Advisor
Angie’s List has changed its business model several times over the years. At one point, consumers had to pay to join, but that is no longer the case. Free profiles are an option, but many of the services are only available if you upgrade to a paid listing. Still, it does get more than 9 million visits a month from people looking for contractors, so the free listing is a good idea. It will also help you with your SEO.
It’s worth noting that Angie’s List is also now owned by the same company as contractor referral service Home Advisor. Home Advisor has been plagued over the years with complaints from contractors and is currently facing a class action suit accusing the company of delivering false leads.
Yellowpages.com and Superpages.com are still two of the top referral sources of web traffic for contractors. Both sites are owned by Dex and allow businesses to claim their online listings for free, although they’re going to make you talk to a salesperson to do it.
Claiming your contractor listings should only be a small part of your online strategy. It’s important to invest in your content marketing and social media to reach the most potential clients.
